The design for this house started as a small farm workers house remodel, and doubled in size to accommodate my sister’s growing family of six in rural Sweden.

Being a home for a large family on a farm the design of the home is programmed for communal areas, privacy and utility in mind. A wing of communal areas which may be partitioned off depending on activities, individual bedrooms with study areas, and a lower floor with a primary use of utility as well as a sauna which looks out onto Lake Vättern. By carving away and into the hillside and leaving a slope to mimic surrounding the landscape contours the original floorpan was doubled and a daylight basement was created with the main living areas above.

The materials of the home as well as the design were chosen to reflect the surrounding rural environment. The cedar exterior cladding will weather to a silver patina and the floor to ceiling white washed pine interior harvested from local forests bring light during the dark winter months. Views of the sky and the family farm are in every room.

Nearing completion.
